Human Zoos

A little over a week ago a discovered the word “Human Zoos”.. Makes you wonder right? What could that possibly mean? If you are like me and have never heard of this before then you are probably puzzled.

zooLets take a walk down history lane a bit. and FYI this might be a bit explicit and make you feel sad, angry or even nauseous, but it is part of history and it has me interested so if you think you might not be able to handle it I suggest you turn right back around and close the page.

Unfortunately, human zoos are yet another uncomfortable example of the world’s flawed past of racism and what’s worse is they happen to be a part of our recent history. Racism has come a long way since the 1800s, but it still occurs today. These wildly flawed incidents of the past are horrific, but should not be forgotten. Along with paying homage to those who suffered, acknowledging these acute examples of racism in our past often reflects the issues of today that will undoubtedly shock and appal generations to come.

It was not too long ago that people from France, Belgium, Germany, and other countries came to visit humans who were locked up in cages. In these zoos, humans were on exhibit in front of a large audience, locked in with animals at a local zoo.

Hundreds of thousands of people would visit these minorities who were on display like animals. The humans zoos were a large attraction, as 18 million came to visit the World Fair in 1889, held in Paris. Over four hundred Aboriginals and Africans were displayed in front of large crowds of people, stripped down half-naked and thrown into cages.

Africans, Asians, and Indigenous people were often caged and displayed in a makeshift “natural habitat.” The human displays were very popular and were shown at world fairs from Paris to New York.

At the 1931 Paris World Fair, this exhibit was so successful that it drew 34 million visitors.Indigenous people are shown participating in archery in 1904 in St Louis at an event whites organized called the “Savage Olympics Exhibition.”

Humans zoos were very popular in Europe during the late 1800s until the mid 1900s. North America was not to be outdone, though, as they also got into the human zoo game.

zoo5Women were recruited( and when I say recruited I really mean enslaved) to work in a Paris zoo because of a genetic characteristic known as steatopygia – protuberant buttocks and elongated labia. Europeans went to the zoo to stare at their curves, amazing that the obsession with the big butt isnt just a new thing, because these women where different they were sexualized, treated like sexual creatures because of the way they were built, they believed that their bodies where unusual and overly sexual and therefore deserve to be treated like sexual creatures. Men and women alike would go to these exhibitions to see them, to touch their bodies( their butts, their private parts and their breasts) as they wish.

A 20 year-old girl from South Africa known as Sarah “Saartjie” Baartman would be emblematic of the dark era that gave rise to the popularity of human zoos. She was recruited by an exotic animal-dealer on location in Cape Town and traveled to London in 1810 to take part in an exhibition. The young woman went willingly under the pretense that she would find wealth and fame. Exhibitors were looking for certain qualities in their ‘exotic’ recruits that either coincided with the European beauty ideal or offered unexpected novelty. Sarah had a genetic characteristic known as steatopygia; a protuberant buttocks and elongated labia.

She found herself being exhibited in cages at sideshow attractions dressed in tight-fitting clothing that violated any cultural norms of decency at the time. A few years later she came to Paris where racial anthropologists poked and prodded and made their theories. Sarah eventually turned to prostitution to support herself and drank heavily. She had been in Europe for only four years.

When she died in poverty, Sarah’s skeleton, sexual organs and brain were put on display at the Museum of Mankind in Paris where they remained until 1974. In 2002, President Nelson Mandela formally requested the repatriation of her remains. Nearly two hundred years after she had stood on deck and watched her world disappear behind her, Sarah Baartman finally went home, where the air smelled of buchu and mint, and the veld called out her name.

We have come far as humanity, for things like this to not be happening anymore, but it is always good to never forget our history so that we do not make the same mistakes we did before.

Just let that sink in…..

Men Kicked Out Of Saudi Arabia For Being Ridiculously Good Looking ..

Three men attending the annual Jenadrivah Heritage and Culture Festival in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia have been kicked out for being too good looking… Too Handsome for a festival!

The Arabic Elaph newspaper reports the man were thrown out by religious police as it was believed they were just too irresistible, and the local women folk who are forbidden from interacting with men outside of the family, would not be able to control themselves.

Jezebel claims to have lifted the veil on one of the trio ,Without further ado, meet Omar Borkan Al Gala, a photographer, actor and poet from Dubai.

Though he has not yet confirmed he was indeed one of the infamous three, Al Gala has modestly posted a link to the original news report on his Facebook page, along with such musings as: “The beauty of a woman must be seen from in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides.” Sigh.

Emirates 24/7 states the three men in question were delegates at a stand promoting the UAE, which had attracted the attention of the religious police due to the unexpected presence of a female Emirati artist.

A spokesman for the UAE delegation issued a statement confirming: “Her visit to the UAE stand was a coincidence as it was not included in the programme which we had already provided to the festival’s management.”

Arabian Business, which has also fingered Al Gala as being one of the trio, points out the strictly conservative Sunni Muslim society prohibits women from interacting with unrelated males.

As ridiculous as this sounds, if your going to get kicked out of anywhere for anything, let it be for that reason. Because although you’re being excluded, it’d be hard to take offence from that. 😀

To This Day..

This is the most powerful, beautiful, most inspiring and saddest thing i have ever watched. I just wanted to share it with everyone because i feel it needs to be seen by the millions. So i will let the video speak for itself.

The Law Really Is An Ass!!

Today i read something quite interesting and thought provoking.

” In most countries worldwide it is illegal to have sex with a child less that 16 years of age, yet it can be allowed with the parents consent to marry a child of less than 16 years of age”

So this got me thinking, it seems in the world pedophilia is allowed as long as you marry that child that you are defiling. This shows that the law really is an ass. I say this because i feel it is by no means ok for a grown ass man, or even a boy to marry a child, taking away their child hood and innocence.

Know i know i talk about this a lot and i am probably just rambling, but the fact of the matter is i am being bombarded with news of kids being married off  by their parents even at the tender age of 12 years old and the media in which i see these stories plastered on is trying to make it seem like this is a normal occurrence, it is pretty much socially acceptable practice in most Muslim countries ( Now dont get me wrong, i am in no way saying this is a Muslim practice, i am just saying it is mostly done in Muslim countries like Malaysia, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, etc.)It just makes me sick to my stomach.

World Aids Day!!

As I wake up this morning i make it a point to let everyone know what today is. I have realized that it is in the society that i live in that no one care about educating themselves on this crucial matter, they live life( ignorantly thinking it does not concern them) day to day having unprotected sex, selling their bodies for not more than 20 buck even some of the doctors attempt to use the same needle on different patients *gasp*! So here is my little piece of encouragement and enlightenment for all who might be oblivious to this matter.

world

World AIDS Day is celebrated on December 1 each year around the world. It has become one of the most recognized international health days and a key opportunity to raise awareness, commemorate those who have passed on, and celebrate victories such as increased access to treatment and prevention services.

UNAIDS took the lead on World AIDS Day campaigning from its creation until 2004. From 2004 onwards the World AIDS Campaign’s Global Steering Committee began selecting a theme for World AIDS Day in consultation with civil society, organisations and government agencies involved in the AIDS response.

Themes run for one or two years and are not just specific to World AIDS Day. Campaigning slogans such as ‘Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise’ have been used year round to hold governments accountable for their HIV and AIDS related commitments.

It is such a shame to see that the people around me, people in my environment do not even know the symptoms of AIDS, they do not even know it is contracted, they just believe its a disease for homosexuals(yes still on that train) or for bad people, or even for non-Muslims(i live in a Muslim country, Malaysia and i’m surrounded by Arabs, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis and of course Malaysians). It even hurts me more when they stupidly believe only Africans have AIDS( I mean what kind of fucked up ridiculousness is this!!).

Anyway, on this day i hope we an all learn a little bit more about this pandemic and educate as well as protect ourselves.

My Heart Is Bleeding For Amanda Todd..

I don’t have much to say other than i am in pain to see that a child can be bullied so much so that she ends up seeing the only way out as killing herself. I know i might be a little late to this story, but i just had to say something after i saw that video. I could not stop crying for days on end for the pain that this girl had to struggle through.

Amanda’s ordeal began at the age of 12 when she was fooling around with friends and lifted her her top for someone on the other end of a webcam.

The person was not a boy of her age though, but a suspected paedophile from across the border in America, who went on to terrorize her right up until her death.

“The Internet stalker she flashed kept stalking her,” said Ms Todd. “Every time she moved schools he would go undercover and become a Facebook friend.

“He went online to the kids who went to (the new school) and said that he was going to be a new student – that he was starting school the following week and that he wanted some friends and could they friend him on Facebook.

“He eventually gathered people’s names and sent Amanda’s video to her new school.”

The video and photos went to teachers and parents as well as pupils.

The bullies began to taunt her with names such as “porn star” and Amanda became anxious, withdrawn and desperate to avoid going to lessons.

Police were never able to track her stalker down, but they did trace the messages to the United States.

Despite their investigations though, the man continued to stalk Amanda, and even threatened to circulate the pictures again unless she gave him another “show”.

She refused so he carried out his threat, and her pain was amplified by her classmates who it’s claimed shared the photos on their cellphones.

She was verbally abused and beaten up.

“Everything she said in the video happened over the past two years,” said Ms Todd. “It was horrendous. I think about it now and I think, ‘Oh my God. How did she survive this long with the pain?’ ”

Amanda had made previous attempts to take her own life, but Ms Todd said that in the weeks leading up to her death she had begun to feel “normal” again, doing things like going to the mall with friends again.

I seriously can not stop thinking how is it that no one around her realized what was going on in her life? How is it that the kids who were bullying her were never stopped? It just makes me see how very little we as humans pay attention to others. I will let the video speak for its self..

Watch Amanda’s video below: Warning – graphic content

Amazingly even after death Amanda is still being bullied..I do not not what kind of world we live in where people still try to hurt those who have left this world.

I pray for her family and for all the other families who have lost a child to bullying..

The Safety Of Our Girls Is In Our Hands..

I lie on my bed with tears in my eyes. I want to cry not just for me, but for the horror that i see in the world. How can it be so hard to be a young girl in the planet that we live in? Has the world not evolved and changed at all!? It pains me.

I read all these articles on the news ( BBC, CNN, Yahoo, MSN live and just general news casters) talking about young girls, as young as 13 years old being killed and called whores because some old perverts decided to rape them, Its a shame how in some parts of the world if a girl is raped she has to hide it for the fear of being shamed and chastised even though it was not her fault.

An example of the terror thats ripping through our communities is the story below.

A father of a teenage girl who was gang-raped by eight men poisoned himself after a video clip of the attack was passed through the family’s village in India.

The 16 year-old girl, from Dabra village in Hisar, north India, was subjected to the horrifying ordeal on September 9, after apparently rebuffing the advances of one of the men.

The Dalit family had tried to keep the assault private, but days later when footage shot by one of the attackers was shown to villagers the girl’s humiliated father, Krishan, killed himself.

This is not the only shocking story of a kind, if i list them out you would feel like killing all the men in the world just so that our little girls can be as safe as imaginable possible. Their innocence is stolen and can never be retrieved again.

Little girls are our future, women make the world a better place, and with all these little girls being tortured, raped, sold into sex slavery, kidnapped, murdered for standing up for their rights, with so many situations clipping their wings, what kind of future do we see for our planet?!

I have a poem from my other blog called Little Girl that explains my fear, and sadness much better than i can articulate here.

Today i suggest you nurture, hug, help just 1 little girl in your life to show them how much they are loved and to put a smile on their face.
